Personal Development

This is an important aspect of a Sixth Form student’s journey. Welling School is committed to supporting a student’s personal development beyond the classroom. Co-curricular activities have been known to support career aspirations by providing an opportunity to gain relevant experience, skills and qualities that may be essential to university courses, apprenticeships, further education and employment.

Sixth Form students will be expected to complete 20 hours of personal development each academic year. However, students are further encouraged to seek out their own opportunities, either within or outside of school. Trips and visits also form part of the personal development experience. These can include team building activity days, guest speakers, university campus tours, careers trips as well as subject trips and rewards trips.

Our sixth form students are the heart of our school community and as part of the personal development experience they take part in peer mentoring of lower school students, subject ambassadors, school council representation and other extracurricular activities.  Additional qualifications on offer include the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), HSLA (Sports Leadership) and Core Maths.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a standalone qualification designed to extend and develop your skills in independent research and project management. The EPQ is awarded UCAS points worth half an A-level and is recognised by universities and employers; some universities make alternative offers to students undertaking an EPQ. The EPQ requires students to carry out research on a topic that they have chosen and is not covered by their other qualifications. They then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production. A student can take inspiration from something studied in class or something completely unrelated to their studies.

Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA)

In Sports Leadership students will learn and demonstrate important life skills such as effective communication and organisation whilst learning to lead basic physical activities to younger people, their peers, older generations and within the community. The courses involve both guided & peer-to-peer learning and supervised leadership to ensure that learners have all the skills they need to lead basic physical activities to other people. This qualification gives additional UCAS points.

Core Maths Mathematics in Context

(Core Maths) is designed to make maths relevant for learners. We use real-life extracts and data, making sure that learners are confident tackling the maths they need for their next step in life.  preparing them for the mathematics requirements of a number of higher education courses developing their understanding and ability to apply mathematics equipping them to apply for employment or higher apprenticeships in a wide range of industry sectors, professional training or university. Mathematics in Context reflects the content of the new GCSE in Mathematics and is measured as a Level 3 qualification, accredited by Ofqual, and equivalent in size to an AS qualification. However, it is distinct from AS Mathematics as learners consolidate mathematical techniques that can be directly applied to real-life contexts and carries UCAS points.

TKAT6 Award

The TKAT6 Award is a prestigious recognition designed to empower students through personal growth and achievement across four key areas: Talent, Kindness, Aspire, and Tenacity. This award encourages students to go beyond the curriculum, develop key life skills, and contribute positively to their community.

  • Talent – Students deepen their subject knowledge through super-curricular activities, including reading, documentaries, lectures, and museum visits. Higher levels involve completing online courses or entering competitions.
  • Kindness – This strand rewards students for supporting their school community. From assisting younger students to leading clubs or organising large-scale events, students develop leadership and teamwork skills while making a difference.
  • Aspire – Students prepare for their future by building employability skills, attending university/apprenticeship open days, and gaining work experience.
  • Tenacity – Encouraging resilience and well-being, students commit to a month-long challenge focused on sleep, exercise, mindfulness, or daily acts of kindness.

The award is available at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, with each stage requiring increased commitment and leadership. The TKAT6 Award celebrates well-rounded students who strive for excellence, and build skills for life beyond school.

Charity Work

The Sixth Form has had an outstanding term of charitable efforts, demonstrating their commitment to giving back to the community. A highlight of their fundraising activities was their support for Greenwich and Bexley Hospice, where they successfully raised £1,200.

This impressive amount was achieved through a highly successful ‘Colour Run’, which brought students and staff together in a fun and energetic event. The occasion was made even more special with inspiring words from The Mayor and Mayoress of Bexley, who addressed participants before and after the run, emphasizing the importance of community support and charitable giving.

The funds were formally presented to the Hospice during a recent Sixth Form Assembly, showcasing the students' dedication to making a meaningful impact. This initiative reflects the Sixth Form’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility, teamwork, and leadership, and sets a strong example for the wider school community.
