Primary Transition

Year 6 Transition

Transition Team: (contact through enquiries@wellingschool-tkat.org)

  • Mr J Brown - Achievement Team Leader Year 7
  • Miss C Boult - Assistant SENCO Year 7
  • Mrs D Davies - Year Care Team Year 7

The transition from primary school into secondary school is a huge step for any child.  This transition can be daunting, but through our carefully considered transition programme, we endeavour to make it as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

Firstly, our dedicated team visits students in their primary school and this starts when children are in year five.  Welling students also visit primary schools to deliver Anti-bullying assemblies, both to share an important message and as an initial opportunity to build some familiarity. This gives primary children the opportunity to ask questions and share any concerns they may have about moving to secondary school.

Year five pupils are also invited to our fun and exciting taster mornings when they can experience some of the engaging lessons they can expect in year 7.  Our main feeder schools are also encouraged to allow their year five pupils to get involved in our Secondary Experience programme, including our fantastic Primary Talent Show, our primary football tournament and our Year 5 Welling Sports Day.

Each year we host a number of open evenings and events.  These include taster sessions for students on our grammar pathway (parents are also invited), an Arts Showcase, and an open evening which is followed by a number of open mornings.  Sign up forms for these events will be on our school website closer to the time.

Once students and parents have made the decision to choose Welling School, our individualised transition work begins. Our specialist team will carefully liaise with primary staff to ensure we have a full and rounded picture of your child and are best equipped to deal with their individual needs.

In July, we invite new year 7 students into school for a fun-filled day where they can meet the staff, look round the school and take part in lessons.  On this day students can expect to

  • Meet their teachers and the school senior leadership team

  • Partake in active and engaging lessons

  • Meet their other members of their tutor group

Following this day, parents and carers are invited into school to meet their child's form tutor and discuss the year ahead.

We will give you access to a huge store of helpful information that you can look at over the summer before your child starts including a parental booklet containing key information, Q & A for students and parents and summer transition work

During the  summer holidays we hold our amazing Summer School.  This is normally comprised of two days of art, dance and sport activities that are designed to promote fun and friendship.  This is free of charge.

Year 7s start school a day before everyone else in September.  This is to help them become familiar with their surroundings, their timetable and to get to know their way around their new school.  Students will also be given a school Google account on which they will be able to access their emails and Google classrooms (for homework).

Within the first few weeks of Year 7, all students will be invited to spend the day with their tutor group, tutor and ATL at Danson Park taking part in water sport activities (kayaking and bell boating).  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, build friendships and learn new skills outside of the classroom.  This has been beneficial to so many students at Welling and is always spoken of as one of the students’ highlights when they look back upon their first year.

Within the first term settling in checks take place, whereby parents and carers are invited in to meet their child's tutor, Achievement Team Leader, Ace tutors and SENCO to discuss progress.

Throughout Year 7 and across the school, students will have a given a range of opportunities to actively engage in learning beyond the classroom.  These opportunities are designed to reinforce positive friendships and promote a further love of learning.  These opportunities include various day and residential trips.
